LB Blake Cashman could make his first appearance of the season against the Eagles

After a two-week European journey and a bye week to recover, the Vikings return to U.S. Bank Stadium this weekend to face a Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles side reeling from two straight losses. Meanwhile, the Vikings are looking for a second straight win for the first time this season.

A slew of players are returning from injury following the bye week, including offensive linemen Brian O’Neill, Donovan Jackson and Michael Jurgens, and linebacker Blake Cashman. But despite practicing for the first time since week 2, quarterback J. J. McCarthy has been ruled out, meaning a start for Carson Wentz against the team that drafted him back in 2016.

The Vikings are taking on a team filled with talent, including QB Jalen Hurts, WR A. J. Brown and last season’s Offensive Player of the Year, RB Saquon Barkley. The Eagles are also coming off a long week, having not played since Thursday Night Football in week 6. Read on to find out how the Vikings can contain one of the league’s most potent rushing offenses, and where you can watch the game.

What uniforms are the Vikings wearing against the Eagles?

Returning home for the first time in almost a month, the Vikings will take to the field against the Eagles wearing their primary home uniforms, consisting of purple jerseys and white pants. The Eagles will wear their road uniforms of white jerseys and green pants.

Keys to the game

Vikings DLs Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen will have a big role to play in stopping the run this week

Against a team as formidable as the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Vikings will have their work cut out for them on defense. The Eagles were one of the top rushing offenses in 2024, but so far this season they’re yet to have a 100-yard rusher in any of their six games. While they were able to get over the line for wins in their first four games, the last two have seen them fall to the Broncos and their division rivals, the Giants.

To follow that blueprint, the Vikings will need to toughen up in the defensive trenches; starters Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen have been effective in the pass game, but are currently the two worst ranked run stoppers on the Vikings defense according to PFF. If they can improve that aspect, and the Vikings as a whole can improve their tackling, they might have a shot at controlling this Eagles offense.

Meanwhile, the Eagles defense ranks in the top 10 at rushing the passer. Whoever the Vikings start at quarterback, the offensive line will have a massive task to keep him on his feet. They’ve shown a big improvement through the last two games despite being decimated by injuries, and the possible returns of starters Donovan Jackson and Brian O’Neill should help this week.

Previous meetings

The Vikings have met the Eagles 27 times in regular season games, winning 15 of those, including the last two at home. Their most recent meeting in Minneapolis came back in 2019, when the Vikings notched a 38–20 win, thanks mostly to a hat-trick of receiving touchdowns from WR Stefon Diggs.

The Eagles have won each of the last two since then, both in prime time in Philadelphia. The Eagles came away with a 34–28 victory in the most recent meeting back in 2023, holding off a fourth-quarter comeback from the visiting Vikings on Thursday Night Football. After going down 27–7 early in the third quarter, the Vikings scored three touchdowns in the final 25 minutes, but a 2-yard run from D’Andre Swift with just over four minutes to go gave the Eagles the edge they needed to hold on.

Vikings injury report

At the start of the week, head coach Kevin O’Connell said G Donovan Jackson, T Brian O’Neill, C Michael Jurgens and QB J. J. McCarthy would be returning to practice in some capacity. That was borne out in the first injury report of the week on Wednesday, as Jackson, O’Neill and McCarthy were limited, while Jurgens was a full participant.

Jackson, O’Neill and Jurgens made it through a full week of practice, but McCarthy remained limited and was deemed questionable for the game, giving Carson Wentz the start despite suffering a shoulder injury during the win over the Browns in London.

LB Blake Cashman (hamstring) had his 21-day window to return from injured reserve opened and took full part in practice, as did OLB Tyler Batty, who was nearing the end of his 21-day return window.  T Christian Darrisaw was rested on Thursday before returning to full practice on Friday, when defensive linemen Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave, and safety Harrison Smith were limited on their own rest day. OLB Andrew Van Ginkel was limited all week as the team monitors his neck injury, and was ultimately ruled out. DT Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins was deemed questionable after being limited all week with a hip injury.

Eagles injury report

The Eagles suffered a loss earlier this week as former Vikings edge rusher Za’Darius Smith announced his retirement from professional football. However, the only player on their active roster not to feature in practice this week was TE Grant Calcaterra, who has been inactive since suffering an oblique injury in week 5.

G Landon Dickerson (ankle) was limited after missing the loss to the Giants last Thursday, as was CB Quinyon Mitchell, who was withdrawn early in that game with a hamstring injury. DT Jalen Carter (heel) was a full participant after missing the Eagles’ last game. LB Zack Baun (finger) and DT Jordan Davis (shoulder) were the only other names on the injury report, but were full participants.

Carter and Dickerson were designated as questionable for the game, but Baun, Davis and Mitchell were not given an injury designation.
