J. J. McCarthy and the Vikings offense put 31 unanswered points on the Commanders last week

Following one of the best exhibitions of bouncebackability in NFL history, the Vikings begin their final road stretch of the season this weekend, when they take on the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Last weekend’s nilling of the Washington Commanders was a welcome tonic, but their NFC East rivals will pose an altogether more challenging task.

The Dallas offense leads the league in a variety of categories this year, and their 44–30 loss to the Lions last week was their first since their bye. That game being on Thursday Night Football also means they’ve had three extra days to prepare. But while the Vikings’ offense has yet to really get going this season, Brian Flores’ defense might be one of the few that can stand up to Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and co.

A loss would officially rule the Vikings out of postseason contention for 2025, a win would show there are still reasons to be hopeful for the immediate future of the franchise.

What uniforms are the Vikings wearing against the Cowboys?

As the home team, the Cowboys have first choice of uniforms for this game and have opted to wear their primary home uniforms of white jerseys and silver-green pants. Because the Cowboys typically wear white at home, the Vikings will wear their primary home uniforms of purple jerseys and white pants.

Keys to the game

Jordan Mason rushed for 52 yards and a score against the Commanders

Last week’s win over the Commanders showed that the Vikings have been woefully under-reliant on the run game this season. They’ve won all four of the games in which they’ve made at least 25 rush attempts this season, and when you have the likes of Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason to hand the ball off to, it just makes sense to give them the rock as much as possible. The pair combined for 128 yards and a touchdown against Washington, and with Dallas allowing 4.7 yards per carry (7th most in the league), this might be an opportunity for another productive day at the races.

The Cowboys lead the league in passing yards this season, with over 275 yards per game coming courtesy of quarterback Dak Prescott. The tenth-year signal-caller has rediscovered the form that saw him receive his first All-Pro nod as a second-teamer in 2023, and after missing the second half of last season, he’s in the conversation for Comeback Player of the Year. The Vikings’ defense has been notoriously porous in the passing game this season, but their real strength is in the front seven. If they can get to Prescott and hurry him into some bad decisions, they might have a chance of pulling off an unlikely road win.

Previous meetings

The Vikings and the Cowboys have faced off 27 times in regular season contests, plus a further seven in the playoffs. Dallas leads the series 15–12, having pulled away with victories in the last three games, all at U.S. Bank Stadium, most recently a 40–3 blowout win in 2022. However, the Vikings won the most recent meeting at AT&T Stadium, coming out on top 28–24 in November 2019. Kirk Cousins hit Kyle Rudolph for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter that day, before the pair combined for a two-point conversion following a Dalvin Cook touchdown late in the third. Former Cowboy Dan Bailey was also on target for the Vikings with a pair of field goals and two PATs.

Vikings injury report

LT Christian Darrisaw is the only member of the Vikings’ active roster to be given an injury designation for Sunday, having been listed as questionable after only managing a limited practice session on Friday. He aggravated a knee injury against the Seahawks in week 13 and was able to face the Commanders last week, but was rested for the latter part of the game once victory was all but assured. RB Ty Chandler was also listed as questionable, as he is still on injured reserve with a knee issue he picked up in week 1. Although he managed a full week of practice, on Saturday the Vikings said they were electing not to activate him.

RB Aaron Jones (shoulder) was limited in practice ahead of something of a homecoming game for him, but didn’t receive an injury designation. The training staff will also be keeping an eye on WR Jordan Addison, who was limited with an Achilles complaint. TE T. J. Hockenson (shin) sat out practice on Wednesday, but improved to limited participation by Thursday, while S Josh Metellus was limited with a shoulder injury. G Donovan Jackson (ankle), S Theo Jackson (neck) and DL Levi Drake Rodriguez (neck) were all limited on Wednesday, but improved to full participation by Thursday.

Cowboys injury report

The Cowboys had major concerns over star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb this week, after the four-time Pro Bowler suffered a concussion in the third quarter of their loss to the Lions on December 4. Lamb was limited on Wednesday, but returned to full practice on Thursday and is expected to play this week. However, LT Tyler Guyton – who hasn’t played since week 12 due to an ankle injury – remains sidelined after missing practice all week, and is the only Cowboy officially ruled out. Three players were deemed questionable: DE Jadeveon Clowney (hamstring), TE Jake Ferguson (calf) and CB Trevon Diggs (knee). Diggs was ruled out on Saturday and remains on injured reserve, as the Cowboys elected not to elevate him to the active roster despite having been a limited participant in practice.
